Short answer

For an item left on a JAL aircraft or in a JAL lounge, start with JAL and provide the flight, arrival airport, date, seat or lounge, time, and precise item details. For an item left in a terminal building, JAL says to contact the airport building where it was left. If another airline operated a codeshare, contact that operating airline. Confirm the current holder, identity checks, Japanese recipient, and delivery method before arranging recovery.

If you have forgotten something on board or in a lounge, please contact the JAL Contact Center.

At a glance

1

On a JAL aircraft

Use the JAL route for the flight and airport of arrival.

2

In a JAL lounge

Contact JAL and name the airport lounge.

3

In the terminal

Contact the airport building where you left it.

4

Codeshare operated by another airline

What to do

  1. 1

Confirm the operating airline and exact location

Separate a JAL-operated cabin, JAL lounge, terminal building, baggage area, and a codeshare operated by another airline.

  2. 2

Use the official JAL or airport route

Contact JAL for aircraft and lounge items; contact the airport building for terminal items. Keep the source page and reference details.

  3. 3

    Send a matchable description

Include flight, date, seat area, time, brand, model, color, size, contents at a high level, and distinctive marks without secrets.

  4. 4

Confirm the handoff before arranging delivery

Ask about Japanese address, proxy authorization, identification, payment-on-delivery, deadlines, and restricted contents.

First separate JAL aircraft, JAL lounge, and airport terminal responsibility

Japan Airlines and the airport may both appear in your itinerary, but they are not necessarily the same lost-property holder. JAL's English guidance routes items left on board a JAL aircraft or in a JAL lounge to JAL. It routes items left in a terminal building to the airport building where the item was left.

Write the exact place before contacting anyone: aircraft cabin, JAL lounge, check-in area, security queue, gate, shop, restroom, baggage-claim hall, or train connection. A report that only says "Haneda Airport" or "JAL" can send the search to the wrong desk.

  • Aircraft cabin: identify the arrival airport, flight number, date, and seat area.
  • JAL lounge: name the airport and lounge, plus the entry and exit time if known.
  • Terminal building: use the airport's own lost-and-found route, not only JAL's contact center.
  • Codeshare: use the operating airline when another airline flew the aircraft.

What to include in the first JAL report

Give the travel date, domestic or international route, flight number, arrival airport, seat or cabin area, and the approximate time when you last handled the item. Then describe the item using brand, model, color, size, case, contents at a high level, serial number when safe, and one or two distinctive marks.

Do not include a passport number, payment-card number, device passcode, or other secret in a free-text inquiry. If the item is a phone, contact the carrier and issuer while reporting it. If it is a passport or residence document, contact the issuing authority or embassy as well.

Domestic, international, and checked-baggage cases are different

JAL's public guidance separates personal property left in an aircraft or lounge from checked baggage that did not arrive. For a forgotten phone, wallet, bag, or document, use the lost-property route. For checked baggage that is missing at arrival, contact the arrival airport's baggage staff and use the baggage-tracing process when JAL provides one.

JAL's international guidance says property found in an aircraft cabin is kept at the airport of arrival. It also says eligible found property may be sent to a specified address by payment-on-delivery. That does not mean every item, destination, or carrier accepts the same route, so confirm the current handoff and recipient requirements before paying for travel or a courier.

If you have already left Japan

You can still start with JAL or the airport's official route. Prepare the flight record, a Japanese translation of the item description, and a practical release plan. Ask whether the holder will send domestically, release the item to an authorized representative, or require in-person collection. JAL and the airport can set different identity checks and deadlines.

Japan Lost Item Rescue can help prepare a Japanese inquiry and contact selected facilities after a paid request. The service does not impersonate the traveler, access JAL systems, or promise that JAL or an airport will release or ship an item. International shipping and courier charges remain separate and are contracted and paid directly by the customer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I report something left on a Japan Airlines flight?

Use JAL's official lost-and-found route and provide the flight, arrival airport, travel date, seat or cabin area, time, and a precise item description. The route can differ for domestic and international flights.

What if I left the item in a JAL lounge?

JAL's official guidance routes lounge items to JAL. Name the airport, lounge, date, approximate time, and the route you took after leaving the lounge.

What if I lost something inside Haneda Terminal 3, not on the plane?

Use the airport terminal's official lost-and-found route for a terminal-area item. JAL's guidance says terminal-building items should be reported to the airport building where they were left.

What if my JAL ticket was a codeshare operated by another airline?

Contact the airline that operated the flight for an aircraft-cabin item. Include both the marketing flight number and operating carrier when you ask for help.

Will JAL ship a found item overseas?

Do not assume it will. JAL's public guidance describes different return routes, including payment-on-delivery in eligible cases. Confirm the current holder, destination, identity checks, and restrictions first; our service fee is separate from courier charges.

Can someone in Japan collect a JAL lost item for me?

Possibly, but JAL or the airport decides. Ask for the exact authorization letter, identity documents, recipient address, and deadline before sending any sensitive copy.
