Short answer

Tokyo Station is used by more than one operator, so start with the company that operated the train or controlled the place where you lost the item. JR East's official English support page provides Infoline assistance for lost and found, while JR East's FAQ tells travelers to contact station staff directly. An item on the Tokaido Shinkansen or Tokyo Metro should follow JR Central or Tokyo Metro instead. Do not submit the same report to every operator without clarifying the journey.

What to do

  1. 1

    Identify the operator

Check the ticket, reservation, train name, line, station, and transfer. JR East, JR Central, Tokyo Metro, and private railways can all appear in a Tokyo Station journey.

  2. 2

Report to JR East or the correct operator

For a JR East train or JR East station area, contact station staff or use JR East's official customer support route. For Tokaido Shinkansen or Metro segments, use that operator's own lost-and-found page.

  3. 3

    Give staff a search-ready timeline

Include the date, boarding and exit stations, train name or number, time, car and seat, transfer, last known location, item features, and whether the item contains an ID or name.

  4. 4

    Plan the handoff from overseas

Ask which station or center holds the item, whether a representative may collect it, what ID or authorization is required, and whether a domestic delivery route is available.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tokyo Station have one lost-and-found office for every train?

No. The operator and exact location matter. JR East, JR Central, Tokyo Metro, shops, and other facilities can keep separate records and use different release rules.

Can JR East help travelers calling from overseas?

JR East's Infoline page says it provides information about lost and found assistance. Use the live official page for the current language, hours, and calling instructions.

What if I am not sure whether it was JR East or JR Central?

Use the train name, line, ticket, reservation, and station sequence to identify the operator. Tokaido Shinkansen items should be sent to JR Central, while JR East trains use JR East's route.

Can Japan Lost Item Rescue access JR East's internal system?

No. We can help prepare a Japanese inquiry after a formal request, but JR East or the relevant operator controls the search, match, release, and delivery decision.
